Linux in use at WUR

See also UnixAtWURFAQ

Process Engineering

at Process Engineering a 20X 2GHz P4 BeoWulf cluster is up and running since 2000, a second 42X 2.8GHz Xeon cluster is running since januari 2004. The first cluster is installed by Linvision, the second is build by Pieter Kroon and Olivier Sessink using Dell poweredge hardware. In spring of 2006 4 more dual processor 2.8 GHz Xeon systems were added.

See also http://www.proceskunde.wur.nl/cluster/ for more

We are also working on Grid computing. Using the idle desktop computers at nights and weekends for a OpenMosix cluster. Due to changing IP addresses in our building this is currently not running, but should be up and running really soon after the IP migration is done.

Process engineering also runs a web and email server for a EU project (running DebianLinux), also a CVS server (again Debian Linux) and several Desktops (Also running Debian).

Next to Linux we also have two Alpha EV67's, recently converted from Tru64 to DebianLinux.

School for Technology and Nutrition (OWI T&V)

T&V has a project for state of the art digital learning material (the FBT project). Two DebianLinux webservers are running for this project. These run both the Interbase and Mysql database servers, and the Apache webserver with PHP, and Samba for filesharing with windows clients. Most development is done with PHP. A CVS server is also running. All servers use HP proliant hardware and run DebianLinux.

Animal Sciences Group, Bioinformatics and Genomics in Lelystad =

The bioinformatics and animal genomics group in Lelystad has built a Linux Beowulf cluster to supply BLAST and other analysis tools through an HTML,Web interface to people in the lab.

  • The data stream from the micro array facilities is handled by Molgenis which runs on a Linux-Apache-PHP-Postgress platform. Molgenis is a data ware house tool from RUG (http://www.molgenis.org ) and will be integrated with the analyses tools developed in Lelystad.

Plant Research International, Applied Bioinformatics (AB)

AB has been using Linux since 2000, when we build our first BLAST cluster.

At the moment AB is using Linux on application (self made/open source/commercial), development (perl/python/java), web (apache), ftp, database (MySQL), scm (subversion) and backup (bacula, dirvish) servers.

Beside Linux , we use Solaris for some legacy programs.

Our 32 bit cluster is based on Rocks 4.1 and at the moment contains 22 nodes with 22 CPU's (3.20GHz Pentium 4).

Our 64 bit cluster is based on Rocks 5.1 and at the moment contains 13 nodes with 48 CPU's (24 Xeon E7450@2.40GHz + 24 Xeon 3050@2.13GHz ).

Public BLAST is at http://cluster.ab.wurnet.nl/webblast/up.html , password is available upon request.

Facilitair bedrijf FB-ICT

There are many LinuX servers at FB-ICT. To name a few:

  • The mail servers for all incoming and outgoing mail, and spam filtering (all running Postfix)
  • Several Oracle servers (on top of RedhatLinux)
  • The DHCP and Quarantaine servers for Homewurk
  • The mailinglist server (running Ecartis)
  • The new www.wau.nl server is a 3GHZ proliant server with 1 Gig memory running RedhatLinux
  • The WURnet Cache Proxy server is a HP Proliant DL-380-G3 with 3Gb memory running Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 3

Laboratory of Nematology

Linux servers for running BLAST and related tools. In total some four servers counting 20 CPU's. The servers run Debian 64-bit XEN images with software package management using NIX.

See the Nematology Bioinformatics section.

Information Technology

The Information Technology Group (Leerstoelgroep Toegepaste Informatiekunde) runs a cvs server based on DebianLinux. The server is currently in setup stage, but should be up and running in some weeks.

Agrotechnology and Food Innovations

A&F is currently using 5 Redhat systems, mainly for Web applications (Apache/PHP) and MySQL databases. Furthermore we have two Alpha Tru64 systems (one dual processor with 4GB RAM) for running large (matlab) simulations.

Laboratory of Bioinformatics

The Laboratory of Bioinformatics (leerstoelgroep Bioinformatica) currently runs fourteen SuSE Linux Enterprise Server systems (dual Xeons, mainly SUN Vx60's) for production and development. Most machines are organised in a cluster and a GRID, using SUN GRID Engine Enterprise Edition (in coorporation with the Applied Bioformatics group of PRI (see above). The servers run a large number of bioinformatics applications, many of which are freely accessible (see http://www.bioinformatics.nl/).

Our workstations are mainly dual-bootable SuSE / WinXP single processor systems.

Plant Production Systems Group

The Plant Production Systems Group runs one Ubuntu 9.04 server for production and development. The server is mainly used for web hosting, data servers and J2EE.Furthermore, we have a couple of Macs.
